Thin layers of plankton: Formation by shear and death by diffusion

چکیده
We show that a steady vertically-sheared current can produce a thin layer of plankton by differentially advecting an initial patch whose vertical and horizontal dimensions are H0 and L0, respectively. Our model treats the plankton as an inert passive tracer with vertical diffusivity kv and subject to a vertically-sheared horizontal current with shear a. After a transient of duration L0=aH0 the vertical thickness H of the patch decreases with HðtÞ L0=at. This shear-driven thinning is halted by diffusion at a time of order a 2=3k 1=3 v L 2=3 0 , and at this time the layer achieves a minimum layer thickness of order a 1=3k v L 1=3 0 . For typical oceanic parameters, such as kv 10 5 m s , a 10 2 s , and L

Stratification and mixing regimes in biological thin layers over the Mid-Atlantic Bight
We use density and microstructure data to characterize the properties and physical setting of optical thin layers observed over the New Jersey shelf in the summer of 2006. Layers were differentiated into two types by their vertical position in the water column, fluorescence intensity, and possibly community composition or cell condition as indicated by the measured differences in the ratio of f...
متن کامل1 Plankton Patch Feasibility Experiments
Efforts this year focused on testing our model of the effects of episodic increases in current shear on the dynamics and impacts of thin layers of phytoplankton and zooplankton. Thin layers are plankton patches that range in thickness from a few tens of centimeters to a few meters, yet can be sufficiently intense to affect biological rate processes and the performance of current and planned Nav...
متن کاملEdge gradients provide evidence of ecological interactions in planktonic thin layers
Physical, optical, and acoustical data from Monterey Bay, California, USA, describing the distributions of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and small fish as well as gradients in the physical habitat were used to examine the interactions between vertically compressed plankton structures (thin layers), their consumers, and the local physical forces they experience. The relationship between upper and ...

Attenuation of light and sound propagation in the upper ocean is tightly linked to the patterns of vertical distribution of particulate matter (primarily detritus, phytoplankton, and zooplankton). Local maxima in these distributions frequently occur within the euphotic zone, and are often concentrated within depth intervals that are less than 1-2m thick (e.g., Dekshenieks et al. 2001, Cowles 20...
متن کاملIn situ Validation of the Source of Thin Layers Detected by NOAA Airborne Fish Lidar
Our long-term goal is to understand how physical-biological, biological-biological and chemicalbiological interactions control the formation, maintenance and dissipation of thin layers of plankton and how the resulting thin layers impact in situ and remote sensing technologies of critical interest to the Navy. We are also interested in improving our ability not only to detect, characterize and ...
